The Whiter the Bread, The Sooner You Are Dead

White Flour Based Products are NOT Elements of Wellness

You’ve heard it called “The Staff of Life.” Even Biblical references refer to bread consumption as common practice, presented as authentic elements of wellness. There is however a problem. Bread then and now are not the same.

They didn’t eat white bread sandwiches back then. Pastries, danish, cinnamon rolls, cookies, cakes, brownies, they did not exist. Nor did white pasta. All of these now common, daily consumed wheat based products in our diets are recent inclusions. And since their introduction, our lifestyles of wellness have been negatively transformed.

The Industrial Age brought about a massive shift in global food production. Suddenly, mass production become the demand, some even argued it became the need in order to fight a global starvation crisis. Unfortunately, naturally made products do not ship or store well. So inventions were made to ensure product “quality” and lifespan while increasing supply. Those new methods not only stripped the natural product, the staff of life, of its nutritional elements of wellness but also added a long list of synthetic chemicals to accomplish the goal. In the end, yes, the products produced, tasted good. So good in fact, the consumers became addicted. And thus began the shift to obesity and illness as the norm, even among those sought to save from starvation.  In fact, starvation with a full belly became a new devil on the scene.

So what is the problem with these maliciously disguised products that profess themselves as elements of wellness?

  1. They provide excessive starch and gluten.

You know how white bread sticks to the roof of your mouth? Well, it does the same in your intestines. It becomes a gooey glob that slugs along.

  1. These products are nearly devoid of natural fiber.

And without fiber, that gooey glob has a hard time moving along. That is why Metamucil is so common in households today.

  1. There are as many as 25 different chemicals that are added.

Chemicals!! Are you a synthetic composition?

  1. These white flour products contain fumigants.

Do you need to be fumigated? When you eat white bread you are being fumigated little by little!

  1. They have been bleached.

Yes, bleach is in those delicious goodies you are consuming. Doesn’t make sense does it?

  1. They are laced with artificial colorings and flavorings.

With all the processing, that flour doesn’t look or taste good so now it needs to be made pretty and flavorful again.

  1. They are nutritionally imbalanced.

White flour products leave you craving the opposite in an effort to attain balance. The cycle is of one vicious extremes.

You’ve certainly heard the saying: You are what you eat.

It is true. When you consume chemicals, fumigants, synthetics, artificial colors and flavours and any myriad of other man made substances produced in refinement, you are making them a part of you. And since they are not elements of wellness your body does not want them nor does it know how to handle them. In time, a rebellion begins and that means illness and disease make themselves present.

But even as awareness has grown, refined wheat products remain the key ingredient and considered element of wellness in the diet of developed nations worldwide. Worse yet, they are replacing traditional diets of nations around the world, setting off a rapid decline in the wellness of millions who have, until now, lived in authentic health. Very simply, the problems resulting from refined wheat products are astounding.

The solution is simple. Eliminate refined grains from your nutritional strategy. Whether they taste good or not, is a moot point. The truth of the matter is this; they are not elements of wellness. They are toxic. White flour products lead to nutritional imbalances that ultimately lead to degenerative diseases, obesity, arthritis and many other ailments that are annoying at best. The only way, the true option is to remove these products from your nutritional plan. Not some of them, all of them. Get back to basics, embrace the true staff of life which is whole grains.

I say it all the time…Quality s key and refined white flour products are a far cry from God given nutritional quality.

I have always known white bread is not good for me but thank you for the breakdown… now I can tell my kids specifics so they don’t ask for white (not that they get it )

Wow! I knew it wasn’t good for us but never understood until now how bad or why! Thanks for sharing, no more white bread in my house!

I’ve heard that eating whole wheat products are also unhealthy because they resemble their white-flour counterpart. Do you agree with this? If so, what are the alternatives for bread and pasta?

    • http://www.el3mentsofwellness.com/ Carl Mason-Liebenberg

      Carly
Taking it a step further, the better still alternative is sprouted grain products. The sprouting process releases enzymes and nutrieint for easier and better digestion and assimilation. Soba noodles are a great pasta alternative as well. Let me know if I can help further!

This article makes complete sense, however i think the struggle is in the addiction and convenience that these food provide.  I have done non processed foods and it was good however, i did not look at it as a lifestyle.  I felt deprived o its important to have options and really have a mind shift. thanks for sharing, I suspect your recipe guide book is filled with amazing food options to make wellness more palatable.

    • http://www.el3mentsofwellness.com/ Carl Mason-Liebenberg

Beau, the process creates addictive products for sure, then you add the conveniense factor and you have real trouble. So yes, it is about creating a lifestyle, not based on deprivation but on whole foods options. And yes, the 30 Day program is filled with those options!

Thank you for your article. I new it wasnt good for us but not that bad.

  • Angie

Wow. I’ve always known this but…. What I struggle with is pastas and white rice. Also I don’t find restaurants offer many alternatives(if any) which is so sad. I think what’s so important in eating healthy is finding healthy alternatives that we actually enjoy. It’s hard to cut out without replacing. Its all about educating yourself and learning what to eat as opposed to what NOT to eat. I truly enjoy reading your blog bc I learn something new and easy to implement everytime I do. Thanks!

Like you said, without replacements it is very hard and becomes a matter of deprivation which never works. Check out the opportunites and be sure to let me know how I can help further!

I had a carpenter friend who used to mix white bread into his plaster to make it even more thick and sticky…I can only imagine what white bread does in your intestines!

This is correct and great information! I only eat 100% Whole wheat bread.

  • http://anitafiander.com Anita Fiander

Back to basics for sure. What I find is the most difficult challenge is getting everyone in the household on board. Time takes time I guess.

I have been hearing this thing but I’m one of those who are still fanatic to white bread. Anyway, thanks for breaking it down a good reminder actually about not eating a lot of it since it’s inevitable.

Some years back I switched to whole grain bread and living in India we love our rice -so it was brown rice for me. Now I have only two chappatis (freshly baked Indian whole wheat bread) in the day – no rice, no bread…and am much better off for it. Thanks Carl and Adriaan. Fantastic information and great presentation too.

    great stuff!!!

Love this Carl.  It’s incredibly important to WAKE UP to all the additives and coloring in even ‘whole grain’ bread.  I’m eating hardly any these days ;)

I’ve been avoiding white flour products for almost nine years now.  It makes all the difference!
