We all know that the immune system is crucial to health and wellness. But what you may not know is how frequently it is compromised and how to defend yourself against the assaults that threaten your life from heart disease to cancer.
So what are the top offenders and how can you combat them? I’ve identified six that I want to expose and resolve today.
#1: Manage Stress
Stress causes the adrenal glands to secrete higher levels of corticosteroids that depress your immune system. That makes stress a high risk factor in heart disease and cancer. Yoga, fitness, deep breathing and meditation are four ways to de-stress and assure a healthy immune system thereby reducing your susceptibility to disease.
#2: Avoid Pollution
Radiation is pollution. The microwave, your cell phone the computer, television are all common radiation pollutants. Chemicals are another class that includes pesticides, herbicides, car exhausts, smoke, fungicides, household cleaners, detergents, furniture polish and paints. The third class of pollution is biological. Household dust, mites, pet dander and moulds comprise this category. All of these compromise you immunity. Minimizing the use of household chemicals, buying organic, using washable dust covers on mattresses, replacing carpet with wood flooring or tile, avoid smoking and smokers, ensuring good ventilation, reducing screen time are all effective ways to boost the immune system.
#3: Avoid Alcohol, Cigarettes and Drugs
Alcohol depresses the immune system, is related to heart disease, hypertension, stroke, gastritis, peptic ulcers and deterioration of mental function. It, as with drug use, reduces proper nutrition, and further damages the immune competence. Tobacco smoke contains high concentrations of toxic chemicals some of which are found in fungicides, fertilizers and rubber tires. Simply stated, a healthy immune system is not fostered with the use of any of these three products.
#4: Take Medication with Caution
Many prescription and over the counter drugs offer treatment by reducing the immune system activity. Others like blood thinners and anti-inflammatory drugs cause unintentional immune suppression. Xrays and ionizing radiation also reduce immune system response. By avoiding unnecessary medications and procedures along with the increased use of natural solutions your immune system is strengthened.
#5: Controlling Weight
Obesity is a global crisis. It is linked with type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, cancer and other increasingly common maladies. Maintaining a healthy body weight through whole foods nutrition is a common sense way to bolster a healthy immune system and improve a sense of well-being.
#6: Exercise
Sedentary lifestyles are killing society. But moderate exercise enhances the immune system, maximizing its function, protecting against cancer, heart disease, osteoporosis and relieving harmful stress.
You won’t be able to avoid every attack the world is throwing at your immune system. But with proper care, nutrition and awareness, you can certainly defend your body and offset the majority of the harmful effects in order to live a vibrant, abundant life!
