22 Easy Ways to Stay Motivated

Motivation is a word we say all the time when referencing diet plans, fitness routines or any other goal or project for that matter. We lose it, we gain it, we lose it again in a roller coaster ride of ups and downs driven by the circumstances of our lives, the attitudes we carry, viewpoints we possess and the role we allow emotions to play. All combined, motivation is a hard element to maintain. Make no mistake, motivation is not a matter of play. It is critical to the success of your journey and the end result. A driving force that either comes from within you or from an external pressure that compels you to make the necessary choices and take the actions, motivation will enable you to achieve the goal at hand.
So how do you avoid losing your motivation in the wake of life’s ups and downs, its gravitational pull that tugs you here then there and back again? Here are 25 tips to help you maintain your motivation to achieve your goals. Whatever they are, whether fitness, nutritional, career, financial or any hobby or project you have set your sights on, these tips will help keep you focused and empowered to succeed.

1.      Develop a Positive Attitude
Negativity towards will only set you up for failure. Stay focused on the positive, write down them down and all the wonderful things that you expect to achieve, feel and accomplish in your life. Take charge of your attitude and the power it possesses. There is a positive side to every situation, challenge or trial you go through. Make it a habit to see it!

2.      Know Your Obstacles
Identify the obstacles that are going to pop up along the way and create strategies that you will incorporate to overcome them when they occur. And remember, excuses are obstacles too. Don’t embrace or dismiss them. Stare them down with a strategy to overcome.

3.      Pace Yourself
Whatever the goal is, figure out the method and pace that will energize you and that you can adhere to. There are many ways to your goal. Carefully pick the one that is best for you and the pace at which you can sustain for the long haul.  This is no however, an excuse to be sluggish.

4.      Be Accountable
Find a partner; someone to share the journey with day in and day out.

5.      Be Realistic.
Setting our goals is crucial. Set short term and long term goals that are attainable. Set challenging goals while being careful not to set them beyond reach just the same.

6.      Make it Competitive.
This is where a friend and accountability partner is yet another asset to your success. Competition pushes you to new levels of achievement. It adds spice and excitement to the journey making you work harder than you would otherwise. Adding a competitive element will help you stay on track.

7.      Further Your Education
The more you know about your goals and how to attain them the easier it will be for you to make good choices. The information you need to achieve your goals is out there, so do some leg work, find it and apply it.

8.      Get Moving
The only way you are going to succeed is to MOVE. Standing still, wishing, hoping, dreaming, and waiting will not get it done. Get busy.

9.      Change it Up.
Don’t do the same thing every day, at the same time and in the same place. Mix it up and keep it fresh.

10. Listen to music.
Studies show that music elevates your mood and can enhance your performance.

11. Track Your Progress.
Start a journal in which you document your activities, your accomplishments, even your struggles. This will provide you with a reference point and help you better see and understand your progress.

12. Reward Yourself.
The internal rewards of achieving a long held goal are great, however giving yourself an external reward can increase your motivation even further. Make sure the reward is not a setback but something that will encourage you and empower you to push on toward the mark. For example, you could have a spa day, or buy yourself a new pair of shoes, or plant a new tree in the garden.

13. Create a Schedule.
Life is busy. Treat your goal as an important appointment that you can’t miss, and make sure you get it done!

14. Find Your Right Time.
We all have times of the day when we perform better than others. You may be a morning person while another will be a night owl. Find the time in the day in which you find yourself most energized, alert and enthusiastic to work on attaining your goal.

15. Eliminate Negatives.
It can be hard to do but eliminating negatives, including people, places and circumstances, out of your life will open you up for more positives.

16. Get Creative
Think out of the box. You always have options so explore them and break out of the status quo.

17. Be Prepared.
Preparation is a vital key to your success.  The lack of preparedness can easily sabotage you. Schedule the time to get things in order, in place and ready to be applied to the strategy you have developed.

18. Involve Your Family.
Family support can be one of the make or break aspects to achieving your goals. Early on in your journey sit down with the family and have a heart to heart explaining your goals and why they are important to you. Express your need for their support and allow them to be accountability partners.

19. Join an Online Community.
Become a member of a goal related group. Having people out there to support, back you up, empower, encourage and even re-direct you is a bigger help than you may imagine.

20. Find a Great Mentor.
Having a mentor to motivate you and guide you can be help you set goals and guide you in the lifestyle that will get you to your destination. A mentor can teach you, push you, hold you accountable and keep you on track.

21. Practice Positive Affirmations.
You must believe in yourself and your goals. In doing so, a daily practice of positive affirmations in which you use present tense such as “I am” rather than “I will” can be incredibly powerful by becoming engrained in your mind and a natural part of how you think of yourself. These affirmations can dramatically affect your ability to succeed.

22. Create a Lifestyle.
Focus on creating new habits and embracing a new way of living. Don’t look at the end result but on the journey itself and how your life can change for the positive in ways well beyond the single goal you have established. For example, you may have a weight-loss goal. Instead of just focusing on losing a few pounds, look to how you can change your life for the long-term and never have to face this challenge again by developing a lifestyle of nutritional and physical wellness. Simply, allow the process to transform you for life! When viewed in terms of a lifetime and a lifestyle, the work you put into reaching your goals has far more value and significance.

These are all great tips Carl, thanks!  I was trying to pick a favorite, but each one has so much value.  I do think finding a mentor is one of the big ones people try to do without, and can’t.  While you shouldn’t try to follow everyone everywhere, I’ve found it helpful to find a few people to learn from.  I don’t think you can learn everything from any one person.
